CASE STUDIES
Client: The Miller Family (Parents with two young children) Location: Bedford, New Hampshire Project Type: Complete Backyard Remodel with 3D Visualization
Project Goals
The primary objective was to transform a sloped, underutilized backyard into a multi-functional, year-round family retreat

1. Maximize Usability: Create distinct, functional "outdoor rooms" for dining, entertaining, and play.
2. Four-Season Appeal: Design a space that remains beautiful and accessible through New Hampshire's distinct seasons (hot summers, snowy winters).
3. Address Slope: Implement effective design to manage a moderate, challenging slope and poor drainage.
4. Privacy: Establish a natural barrier from neighboring properties for a sense of seclusion.
5. Family-Friendly: Incorporate safe, durable, and engaging features for young children.
6. Visualize with Confidence: Use 3D design rendering to ensure the family could fully visualize the concept, materials, and spatial flow before construction began.
KEY CHALLANGES
The New Hampshire location and existing property conditions presented several key challenges:

-
Severe Climate Swings: The design had to withstand freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and intense summer sun, requiring the use of extremely durable, locally appropriate materials (e.g., granite, native stone, hardy plants).
-
Sloping Terrain and Drainage: The existing grade caused rainwater to pool near the house foundation. Creating level spaces for a patio and play area required significant earth-moving and retaining structures.
-
Native Plant Selection: Choosing plants that are native or highly adaptive to New Hampshire's USDA Hardiness Zones (typically 4b–5b) was crucial for sustainability, low maintenance, and year-round interest.
-
Building and Zoning Regulations: Ensuring compliance with local Bedford zoning laws, especially for retaining wall height and any potential water features or structures, required meticulous planning.
-
Aesthetics vs. Function: Balancing the desire for a rustic New England aesthetic with the need for modern, functional outdoor living features (like a kitchen and fire pit).
The Design Solution
To address the challenges and achieve client's goals, a strategic, zoned design was developed and implemented.

3D Grading & Elevation Modeling: Precisely modeled the slope, showing the client how tiered levels would integrate with the house and existing grade.
Seasonal Visualization: Rendered the design in summer (lush greenery) and winter (snow cover) views, showcasing how a stone fireplace/fire pit would look when in use on a cold evening.
Height & Massing Simulation: Modeled mature Evergreen Screens (e.g., White Pine and Arborvitae) at their future height to show the exact level of privacy they would provide from neighbors' sightlines.

PHYSICAL/LANDSCAPE SOLUTION
Installed Segmental Retaining Walls using New Hampshire granite to create two-level terraces: an upper dining patio and a lower lawn/play area.
Installed a large, covered Outdoor Kitchen with a New England stone fireplace to extend usability into cooler months, and used low-voltage Landscape Lighting for safety and ambiance year-round.
Planted staggered layers of native, cold-hardy shrubs and evergreens to create a natural, dense privacy hedge that maintains coverage in winter.

Final delivery
The 3D design served as the critical communication tool, aligning the client's vision with the necessary, complex structural and climate-driven requirements of a New Hampshire landscape. The Millers achieved their goal of a beautiful, safe, and functional four-season retreat that successfully mitigated the challenges of the terrain and climate.
